Historic Paddle Steamer to Dock at Southwold

The world’s last seagoing paddle steamer will make a stop on the Suffolk coast this month, offering passengers a unique trip to London.

The Waverley is due to dock in Southwold on Thursday 25 September as part of its Thames Estuary tour. From there, passengers will board for a steam-powered journey to the capital, passing under Tower Bridge, with a stop at Clacton along the way.

First launched in 1947, Waverley spent decades in service before being retired in 1974. She has since been restored and continues to operate trips around the UK, drawing large crowds wherever she docks. Her visit to Suffolk last year attracted significant local interest, and organisers are expecting similar excitement this time around.

Passengers on board will be able to take in the sights, sounds and atmosphere of a traditional steamship. Visitors can hear the telegraph ring, explore the engine room, and watch as the giant paddles turn through the water — a view available through the ship’s portholes.

Organisers say the trip offers a rare chance to step back in time and enjoy the heritage of steam travel, combined with the unforgettable experience of sailing into the heart of London.
