Bungay High School’s sixth form could close permanently under proposals put forward by the East Anglian Schools’ Trust.
The trust confirmed that no new Year 12 admissions will take place in 2025 after only 19 students enrolled this September. Current Year 13 students are not affected and will complete their studies as planned.
In a statement, the trust said the sixth form had experienced a “gradual decline of applications over several years” with this year’s intake reaching an “unprecedented low.”
The decision to suspend admissions was taken because low numbers meant the school could not provide a broad enough curriculum for new students without impacting quality. Staff supported Year 11 pupils in securing places at alternative providers, and the trust says all have now settled into their chosen courses.
A formal proposal has now been made to the Department for Education to close the sixth form from September 2026, once the current cohort has completed their studies.
The trust added it remains committed to providing high-quality education at Bungay High School and will continue to work closely with students, parents, and the wider community as the plans progress.
